The Impromaniacs have been learning, teaching and performing Improvisational Theatre since September 1989!
The heart of Improvisational Theatre is story telling...
collaborative story telling to be specific. All the actors on stage
work together to build the elements of a story and bring it to you, the
audience! This gives each of us the unique experience of being the director, the characters (and environment) and, in a sense, the audience member of our stories.
A story can be one that lasts 30 seconds or extends to the length of a one act play! Scenes can have "restrictions" (think of games you might have seen performed on such things as Whose Line Is It Anyway) or perhaps all that they have is an inspiration from the audience - sometimes we have nothing at all!
|
Is it "risky" for the actors? Well, it does require a high degree of trust in the people you are working with on stage - you have to be willing to take risks and know that everyone on the stage with you will be working with you to build an amazing story!
Mostly Improv is comedic, but sometimes it turns dramatic if that is what the story needs - whatever the story is, know that is it fresh, having been created right there on the spot just for you!
